I almost always go into a workout in a fasted state. Maybe that's not a good idea?

Not the end of the world if you are eating shortly after but you may see a performance boost by just evening adding a quick protein bar that has some carbs in it! If you aren't exercising for more than an hour, it's personal preference assuming you had a good dinner the night before and have replenished your glycogen stores.
