What is Vitamin D?
First, it’s important to understand what Vitamin D is and the role it plays in the body. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin meaning that it is absorbed by fat and any excess that isn’t utilized is stored in fatty tissue. Interestingly, Vitamin D is produced naturally in our bodies when UV light (sunlight) hits our skin and triggers its synthesis. Unfortunately, there are many ways in which this process can become inadequate, one of which is this time of year when there is a much lower UV index. Nearly all of our organs have receptors for Vitamin D which means it has an extensive impact on the proper functioning of our bodily systems and deserves our upmost attention!
