Hello and welcome to 4-Minute Friday where I share, in four minutes or less, the latest things I’m doing to enhance my health, save money, and make day-to-day life easier and more enjoyable.
All comments and follow-up questions can be posted directly below, on my Facebook page or emailed to me at zach.griffith1@gmail.com!
What I’m Getting Back Into:
Morning runs.
I’m hard-pressed to find a better strategy to set yourself up to have a good day than to get outside and be active first thing in the morning.
Morning sunlight? Check.
Daily exercise? Check.
Time spent in nature/outdoors? Check.
Rightfully so, it can be difficult to get out of that warm bed and throw your running shoes on first thing. But once you understand the positive influence it has on your everyday functioning, you’ll start to see it as a necessity rather than a punishment.
If running isn’t your cup of tea, a brisk walk or even stepping outside to jump rope and do some bodyweight exercises goes a LONG way.
Literally just 10-15 minutes is all it takes.
And, if you struggle to have a morning movement… this will often do the trick.
Podcast Series I’m Listening To:
Dr. Huberman recently hosted world-renowned sleep expert, Dr. Matt Walker, on his podcast for a 6-episode series taking a deep dive into sleep.
And it’s DEEP, indeed.
So far, they’ve discussed the variations in sleep needs between different individuals, the science behind napping, caffeine’s influence on sleep, and much more.
Although they’ve only released four of the six parts in the series, I’ve already gleaned an incredible amount. I’ll be sharing a few of these insights on a research spotlight post to be released early next week.
If you’re someone who struggles with falling or staying asleep, there’s more than likely something in this series that’ll benefit you.
And even if you don’t currently have issues sleeping but don’t prioritize it as much as you should, this podcast will make clear why you should change this behavior.
Needless to say, sleep is the foundation of our health.
More coming next week.
What I’m Taking Advantage Of:
As I’m settling into St. Louis for the next month and a half, an upmost priority of mine is to find a new gym.
However, I discovered a slight loophole during this process.
Many, if not all, fitness centers offer some type of free trial whether that be a day pass or an entire week to try out their space.
And with the great number of gyms that exist within a larger populated area, one can go quite some time window shopping without paying a dime.
Let’s see how long I can make it.
Although most are situated in a certain area, taking on free trials and trying out new gyms, fitness classes, yoga, etc. can be a great way to break up your normal routine and step outside your comfort zone.
Give it a go!
What else?
Don’t spend all day in the sunshine without sunglasses on. Your eyes can get sunburnt, too. Spoken from experience.
New post coming next week with some updated sleep strategies as mentioned above … stay tuned!
