Instagram Post I’m Revisiting:
A name I’ve mentioned before, Ben Bruno, released an Instagram post earlier this year that’s absolutely golden.
For those that don’t recall, Ben is a celebrity trainer who spends time in the gym with the likes of superstar NBA players, Hollywood actors, and everyone in between.
Needless to say, he boasts quite the curriculum vitae.
Anyway, he titled this post “My Training Philosophy” and in it, discusses his top nine beliefs regarding exercise.
You can see the entire post by using the link above, but I’ll share my big takeaways.
The fitness space is yet another one of the areas that social media has seriously damaged.
Whether it’s the promotion of goofy exercises that look cool or unreal amounts of training that most can’t ever practically incorporate (nor should), many of us get overwhelmed by this constant influx of new information and fail to incorporate exercise at all as a result.
Instead, Ben prioritizes the idea that there really is no perfect way to exercise.
If you don’t experience pain with and enjoy “ABC” exercises but do “XYZ” because they’re supposed to be “better” for you yet aren’t the friendliest on your joints, it’s time to re-evaluate.
There are far too many options out there to choose exercises that you don’t enjoy… let alone risk an injury by doing them.
Which brings me to his next big idea – always prioritize consistency over intensity.
This is something that took me years to grasp, however, I’m finally getting a stronghold. Although it seems macho, intensity is great until it leads to an injury or burnout and a distaste towards exercise all together. Better than this is a manageable, consistent exercise routine that allows you to leave the gym feeling fulfilled rather than beaten to the ground.
And finally, he wraps up with the advice to never compare your gym progress to others. Especially starting out, it’s not being fair to yourself to judge your Chapter 1 against someone else’s Chapter 11.
Instead, just try to be a better version of the person you were last week.
That advice doesn’t just stop in the gym, either.
New Habit I’m Benefiting From:
Washing my hair less frequently.
I know I’m late to the party here, but I’d be remiss not to mention it for those that are still living in the ancient times of everyday shampooing.
I was one of those who washed my hair daily… sometimes even twice a day if I were to sweat a good deal throughout the day.
Then, I heard 3-4 different people in the same week reveal the benefits they’ve experienced from washing less frequently – some even just a single time each week.
Although I haven’t gone to that extreme, shampooing every other day or even just twice a week has already proven its benefit to me.
My hair looks better, feels better, and is much easier to style.
After researching this a little more, it makes sense. Our scalp naturally releases oil for the health of our skin and hair.
Excessive shampooing strips these oils, dries out our hair, and can even cause damage to our scalp and hair strands.
Need yet another reason?
Inflation hasn’t taken it easy on the shampoo market to say the least.
On the topic of hair, it’s worthwhile to find and invest in a quality barber/hairdresser to keep your confidence high… special shoutout to Amy at Sunny Mountain Studio!
New Seasoning I’m Using:
As you can tell, I’ve been getting out of my comfort zone and moving past just the salt, pepper, and garlic lifestyle.
Really has taken some courage I must say.
Entering next on my agenda for the summer of seasoning is Everything But The Bagel.
Yes, that’s indeed what it’s called.
Just a combination of sesame and poppy seeds, garlic, onion, and sea salt doesn’t sound too exciting but as others who have tried it will likely attest, it’ll blow your socks off.
It can be used on a wide-ranging array of foods like eggs, grilled chicken, bagels (literally), pasta, and even popcorn.
For the consistent readers, you know by now I’m fully bought in if it checks 3 boxes: tasty, versatile, and cost efficient (I penny pinch and buy the off-brand variety).
Everything But The Bagel checks those boxes.
What else?
The summer heat wave is here. If you’re spending time outside and profusely sweating (as you should be), consider revisiting my post on electrolytes to ensure you are maintaining proper hydration.
Collagen part two coming early next week… give it a read and find out if the benefits of collagen are worth investing!
Consistency > Intensity. Always.
