What I’m Trying to Do More:
Embrace boredom.
Might sound puzzling but let me expand on this.
I remember when I was young and would insistently complain about being bored as soon as the first moment of stillness arose. The lack of stimulation would drive me mad and I needed something, anything, to fill the time.
However, it was often boredom that led me to spend more time with friends, do something creative, or even better, just be bored.
I recently heard an interesting and likely credible argument that a contributing factor for the uptick in mental health disorders stems from the lack of stillness (boredom) in today’s age.
We have the ultimate escape from the occasional slowness that life offers us at the edge of our fingertips.
Waiting in line at the store… out comes the iPhone.
Headed for the post-lunch bathroom break… Instagram galore.
Commercial break from the game… might as well check Snapchat.
What if boredom serves a valuable purpose and we are doing more harm than good by avoiding it?
In past times, boredom was a very natural part of life. Think about the hunter- gatherers on an 8-hour excursion – they weren’t telling jokes the entire time… let alone scouring through political Twitter arguments.
And what about the young ones in charge of milking the cattle and doing household chores, I can *almost* guarantee they weren’t sporting AirPods in the process.
It seems that stillness is the time where emotional processing can occur, however, it’s a rarity in the age we live in.
The backup of memories, thoughts, and frustrations probably isn’t such a good thing. And, it’s scary to think that children today may never truly understand what it feels like to be bored because of the rapid uptick in technology.
With this, my goal is to reduce screen time, let my mind wander, and be bored more often.

Quote I’m Pondering:
Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher, is credited with one of the greatest quotes in history…
“We have two lives and the second begins when we realize we only have one.”
Pretty good…. pretty prettttttty pretty good as Larry David would say.
It can be applied to so many aspects of life and reminds me of the time-old adage about what one will come to regret in their last days of life.
Quite deep but it’s a reasonable question and can guide our behavior if we consider it more often.
And it’s a much-needed reminder that we all have limited time here on Earth so you might as well make the time worthy.
For most, I’d say this involves facing our fears more often than we do.
Whether that’s singing the national anthem at a game because you’ve always wanted to, starting your own business, moving to a new city across the country, or asking that one person out on a date… time is ticking, do the thing!
Social Media Page I’m Enjoying:
As you’ve hopefully picked up on by now, I subscribe to the less-than-fancy approach to health and fitness. Especially when it comes to exercise, you get the best bang from your buck by focusing on the meat and potatoes.
Yet, social media is plagued with fitness influencers doing insane exercises that often have a high injury risk for the sake of being different.
Celebrity trainer Ben Bruno, on the other hand, is not one of those people. He believes in the main staples and simplified fitness while also integrating a great sense of humor into his approach.
He trains everyone from movie stars like Kate Upton to NBA athletes such as Klay Thompson and gives an inside look on how he goes about setting up their programs.
Especially for the women out there, he offers an important perspective on changing your mindset about strength training if you have hesitations in that regard.
