Super Bowl Commercial That Got Me Thinkin’:
Candidly, I didn’t pay much attention to the commercials during the big game as I was too busy devouring buffalo chicken dip.
However, there was one that caught my eye.
“Obesity is America’s deadliest epidemic” were the first 5 words spoken – an attention grabber if I’ve ever heard one.
The commercial was produced by Hims & Hers, a telehealth company that provides healthcare services directly to consumers.
In the ad, the “healthcare services” being discussed were openly pointing to the company’s ability to prescribe GLP-1 drugs – ones very similar to Ozempic/Wegovy but with slight modifications due to patenting.
Important to note though, these compounds are NOT FDA approved.
Which some have started to push back against for safety reasons – but without the research to support increased risks, I’m not sure where I stand quite yet.
For one, Hims and Hers is an alternative to the highly priced pharmaceutical industry that many argue takes advantage of consumers.
And especially with these newer “weight loss drugs”, there does seem to be quite the headache involved with who qualifies, who doesn’t, and insurance coverage.
Yet at the same time, the commercial utters that “it’s not our bodies that are broken”, rather, “the system is rigged to keep us sick”.
Sure, it’s easier than ever to eat poorly and not move a muscle.
However, I think this is a short-sided viewpoint.
Although it may be more difficult, we all have the agency and willpower to make our own decisions – especially those that have direct implications on our health.
I.e. food choices and physical activity.
I’m absolutely not saying I’m out on GLP-1 drugs. I certainly believe they have their time and place and are a great kickstart to living a happier, healthier lifestyle.
But if anyone stands beside the argument this is the only solution, I’d have a hard time getting on that bandwagon.
And if you go that route, make sure you prioritize strength training and protein consumption to prevent muscle loss!
Mindset I’m Embracing:
2D vs. 3D lessons.
Hat tip to the conversation between comedian Tom Segura and Chris Williamson of the Modern Wisdom podcast.
Some lessons in life must be learned the hard way, not absorbed vicariously.
No matter how much we wish it weren’t true, we have all lived it.
Not preparing enough for a big speech until you feel the embarrassment of flopping.
Not packing an extra layer until you freeze your you-know-what off for hours.
Not getting your car’s tires changed on time until you go for a slide in the rain.
Not prioritizing strength training until you throw your lower back out.
Lessons learned through experiences are what sticks and make us who we are.
When you come to fully grasp this, those hard moments can be seen in a different light. They’re shaping our future selves to be stronger and more resilient.
Here’s a banger post from Alex Hormozi in full support of this…
Quick Visual on Calories:
Many think that eating healthy means eating less.
And while it often does mean eating less calories, it absolutely doesn’t mean eating a smaller volume of food.
In fact, it typically means the opposite.
As you’ll see the from the image above, healthy whole foods typically have much lower energy density , but higher nutrient density, than those that are highly processed. 100 calories of strawberries is a much larger serving size than 100 calories of dried fruit often riddled with added sugar.
This is fantastic because when you buy into it, you can actually eat MORE food without gaining weight.
Quite the life hack if you ask me.
What else?
